Here’s when Foo Fighters will write a Christmas song

Foo Fighters have accomplished a lot in their 25 years as a band, but one thing they’ve never done is write their own Christmas song. As frontman Dave Grohl tells Zane Lowe on Apple Music, he doesn’t think that will change any time soon.

“Trying to write a new Christmas song, it’s kind of tricky,” Grohl says. “Because it’s like, you’re so used to the classics. You’re so used to being crotchety.”

“I think we’ve been asked to do it, but I wouldn’t even know what to say,” he continues. “Like, ‘I took mushrooms with the teachers from my school. I took a bunch of mushrooms in my house with my mom.’ I don’t really think it’d work. No, we’ve never even tried. I don’t know if people would want us to do that. I’m not sure.”

Grohl does, however, envision one scenario in which a Foo-mas song might come to fruition.

“Maybe the day that we decide we don’t want to do this anymore, we make a Christmas song and then we ride off into the sunset,” he says.

While the Foos have never written a Christmas song themselves, they did just perform a cover of Chuck Berry‘s “Run Rudolph Run” during an Amazon Music holiday concert stream. Additionally, Grohl and producer Greg Kurstin have spent the last week covering Jewish artists as part of their Hanukkah Sessions song series.

Meanwhile, Foo Fighters will release their new album Medicine at Midnight, featuring the single “Shame Shame,” on February 5, 2021.
