Stats from the 2018 KSHE Summer Blood Drive are as follows:
• 2,376 donors
• 2,194 red cells
• 69 more donors and 136 red cells more than July 2017 (last year), which officially beats our record!
According to Amanda Hess, Director, Donor and Public Relations for MVRBC, “KSHE is an event where people bring in their families. It is a generational phenomenon and we had a lot of donors present with their parents, grandparents, children and siblings.”
KSHE 95 Promotion Director Kristen Lewis agrees, adding, “Many donors that give at the KSHE drives have been doing so for decades. Yet at each drive we also see hundreds of brand new donors. These loyal KSHE listeners tend to give at both the Summer and Winter KSHE drives.”
For MVRBC, the blood drive comes at just right time for our region’s blood supply. “During the summer months, every day, every donor and every donation counts. By asking listeners to support the blood supply right after the Fourth of July, KSHE helps ensure our ability to meet patient needs in spite of the decrease in donations we experience around holidays,” notes Amanda Hess.
The KSHE Summer Blood Drive was first held in 1984 to support the blood supply during this critical time of year. Since that time, the KSHE listening audience has become a reliable base of support for the blood supply during the summer and holiday season. Nearly 4,000 listeners participate in the July and December blood drives every year.
Blood components are in constant use year-round, but the rate of blood donation decreases during the summer months. During holiday weeks the blood center loses more than 1,000 donations and the summer holidays occur frequently from Memorial Day, to Independence Day and Labor Day, so it is difficult to replenish supplies.
Donations of all blood types are needed, but there is a special need for type O-negative and O-positive whole blood donors, type B-negative, type AB plasma donors and platelet donors. Type O red blood cells and AB plasma are “universal” blood components, so named because these components can be transfused to patients of all other blood types and are frequently used in emergency settings.
The December KSHE 2018 blood drive dates are scheduled for Friday, December 14th and Saturday, December 15th. Both MVRBC and KSHE will post the locations online as they get closer to the event, and donors can refer to those web sites again or can call MVRBC at 800-747-5401 to schedule anytime in advance. Donors that gave this past weekend at the KSHE Summer Blood Drive will be eligible again to give in September, which would still allow them to also give at the next KSHE blood drive in December.
