Hero of the Day
Name: Army Reserve Dustin Row
From: Columbia, IL
Proudly served in the: Army Reserves
First of all, Dustin LOVES KSHE 95!!! Here is the rest of Dustin’s story:
Dustin was in the Army Reserves 2001 – 2007. Dustin served in the 724th Transportation Unit of Bartonville, IL during the Iraq War 2004-2005. While in Iraq, his unit escorted fuel convoys primarily to Baghdad and the Anbar province in Western Iraq. During his tour, Dustin’s troop was involved in a massive attack by the Shiite militia in which two were killed in action and one soldier was captured and found dead several years later. Five civilian drivers were killed with one still missing. Fourteen soldiers and civilians were wounded in the attack. Dustin’s truck was the only one out of six trucks to make it through the 3 mile long kill zone.
After his service in the military, Dustin was welcomed home by his family and hometown community of Columbia, IL. He felt very fortunate to return home unharmed and to be able to find employment within the community. After being home for a few years, he questioned his purpose in life and why he was not harmed physically or emotionally when so many veterans are not so fortunate. He was aware that other veterans were struggling in many different ways. He felt so strongly about helping other combat veterans that he started the Songs4Soldiers organization – to assist veterans suffering from PTSD, depression, unemployment, health issues, or just struggling to get back on their feet again. His original goal was to help 4 veterans per year.
Under Dustin’s guidance and vision, Songs4Soldiers has grown tremendously. Since Songs4Soldiers was started in 2013, 350 veterans and 6 veteran organizations have been assisted, with over $420,000 disbursed. Assistance includes, but is not limited to, financial assistance with house payments, home repairs, vehicle repairs, tuition needs, medical bills, moving expenses, etc. Dustin also involves the community by coordinating and encouraging businesses and individuals to donate their time and services directly to veterans – such as donating vehicles, vehicle repairs, dental work, home repairs, help with moving, donations of items for a veteran to start a new business, etc.
