Gary Dean Richrath, the lead guitarist and songwriter for REO Speedwagon from 1970 until 1989, has died at the age of 65.
Richrath, born October 18, 1949 in Peoria, Illinois, passed away on September 13, 2015, as confirmed by his former REO Speedwagon singer Kevin Cronin via a post on Facebook.
Richrath wrote many of the band’s songs including “Golden Country” from 1972, “Ridin’ the Storm Out” (1973), “Only the Strong Survive” (1979) and “Take It On the Run” from 1981.
He left the band in 1989 and released a solo album, Only the Strong Survive, in 1992.
