Green Day was supposed to return in triumph toward the end of the year, releasing the first of three all-new albums, Uno!, on September 25th, with Dos! to follow in November and Tre! to arrive in January. But things took an unexpected turn when frontman Billie Joe Armstrong sought treatment for substance abuse following a profanity-filled tirade at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas on September 21st.
Armstrong exploded after his band's set was cut from 45 minutes to 25, and he was given a signal halfway through their seventh song that they had one minute left. After screaming for two minutes at promoters, he smashed his guitar and left the stage.
A statement was issued on Sunday, September 23rd, apologizing for the incident and stating that a number of other promotional appearances by the band would be canceled while Armstrong sought help.
As weeks went by, the band announced that a North American tour slated to begin in November would be postponed, and that further dates in January and February were also being put on hold.
Bassist Mike Dirnt said in an interview, "I know that my friend's life is in danger and that's all I care about. We're brothers-in-arms waiting for Billie to return healthy, but we're not going to force anything. Tre (Cool, drummer) and I will be standing here for Billie."
To try and make up for the lost tour dates and momentum, the release of Tre! was moved up to December. But first-week sales of Dos! in November were half that of Uno! -- was that because of Billie Joe's situation, or were fans just not interested in buying three albums in a relatively short amount of time?
