Ray Davies backtracks over Kinks reunion comment

Ray Davies is seemingly backtracking over a comment he made to Mojo magazine regarding his brother Dave Davies and a possible Kinks reunion. Ray, who along with his brother, have been alternately publicly endorsing and/or playing dumb to the prospects of a Kinks reunion with drummer Mick Avory, and are finally being taken to task for their comments. The usually reliable Mojo spoke to Ray about a 50th anniversary reunion and was quoted as saying, “Dave’s invited to the party, but if he doesn’t want to do it, (the reunion) will happen anyway. He’s very welcome to turn up if he wants. I’d much rather work with him than without him." Ray went on to tell Mojo: “I think it’s all down to the music. If somebody can’t or won’t play, there are other players out there. Mick and I want to do it."

The Kinks official website posted a message stating: “MOJO is wrong. There will be NO Kinks reunion without BOTH Ray and Dave Davies. Ray Davies claims to have never said this.”

Dave Davies, who has always battled his brother Ray for attention and control of the Kinks, says that he's responsible for the band's signature sound on "You Really Got Me" which propelled them to fame: "It wouldn't have been a record without, in all modesty, I think it wouldn't have been a record without that guitar sound on it, so it's like it paved the way for our whole career."

Coming on October 14th is The Essential Kinks, featuring 48 tracks spanning the group’s 50-year career and all their record labels -- Pye, Reprise, RCA, Arista, and Columbia. Ray Davies personally selected the tracks with the band’s approval.

Dave Davies' new musical, Sunny Afternoon, will premiere on October 4th at London’s Harold Pinter Theatre.

Ray Davies is currently writing a new album to serve as a companion piece to his 2013 book Americana: The Kinks, The Road And The Perfect Riff.
