Foreigner 'Jukebox Hero' musical opening next summer
The wait is over for Foreigner fans, with the musical built around the band's legendary catalogue opening next summer in Calgary, Alberta.
The new show, called Jukebox Hero after Foreigner's 1981 classic, will open first in Calgary, running from August 10th through 12th at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, before hitting Edmonton on August 16th through 19th at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium. Jukebox Hero is based on the screenplay written by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais -- best known for the films The Commitments and Across The Universe, along with their work on TV's The Tracey Ullman Show.
Foreigner co-founder Mick Jones said in the statement announcing the show: "I never could have imagined when I set out to create Foreigner 40 years ago, that we’d still be touring around the world and performing the music we love all these years later. I am so proud that these songs will now be reinterpreted for stage, and am honored by the team that is helping bring this music to life. I can’t express the gratitude I feel when fans share stories of how our songs have been woven into their milestones and memories over the years. I had so many great times with Foreigner in Canada and I look forward to bringing the band back here for our 40th anniversary tour. I’m thrilled that Canada will see the world premiere of our brand-new musical, Jukebox Hero, in 2018.”
According to the show's press release, "Jukebox Hero is set in Blaydon, Pennsylvania, a rust-belt town dependent on one main industry. The story starts with the closure of its biggest factory and the plight of its now unemployed workforce. The town seeks the help of Blaydon’s most famous son, music superstar Ryan, but returning to Blaydon doesn’t just mean revisiting a town where he’s become a stranger, it means confronting the ghosts of his past.”
Mick Jones told us that the song "Juke Box Hero" was actually inspired by a fan who stuck around after soundcheck and was spotted by him when the band came back to the venue hours later. Jones recalls how he gave the lucky fan a night to remember: "We went to the soundcheck and it was pouring with rain and there was one sort of sad, lonely fan left, and he was standing there drenched. And I kind of took pity on him and invited him in and really gave him, like, backstage experience. We had them put him on the side of the stage, and I looked at the kid and I could see his mind whirling. I was just trying to imagine what was going through his head that's how it gave me the nucleus of the song.”
