John McVie battling cancer, Fleetwood Mac cancels Australian tour

Fleetwood Mac's bassist John McVie has been diagnosed with cancer, forcing the group to cancel its upcoming tour Down Under. Fleetwood Mac's 14-date tour was set to kick off in Sydney on November 10th. There has been no mention of the Fleetwood Mac scrapping its only remaining U.S. date of the year, the one-off December 30th show at Las Vegas' MGM Grand Hotel & Casino, which is notably not among the canceled dates.

The band issued a statement on announcing the canceled Down Under leg:

Fleetwood Mac who has just completed the European leg of their phenomenally successful worldwide tour has announced the cancellation of their upcoming 14 date tour of Australia and New Zealand.

John McVie, one of the co-founding and original members of Fleetwood Mac is now scheduled to be in treatment for cancer during that period of time.

"We are sorry to not be able to play these Australian and New Zealand dates. We hope our Australian and New Zealand fans as well as Fleetwood Mac fans everywhere will join us in wishing John and his family all the best."

Although it's Fleetwood Mac's legendary late-'70s and '80s lineup that garners most of the fan worship, Mick Fleetwood feels that the band riding the waves during multiple eras since it's formation is miraculous: "I think just the basic survival element of the history of this band alone -- not only just the band that we're talking about now, but from when it first started back in England -- that it has fared against incredible odds, y'know, and is still there."

CANCELED: Fleetwood Mac Down Under tour dates:

November 10, 11 - Sydney - Entertainment Centre
November 14 - Brisbane - Entertainment Centre
November 16 - Hunter Valley - Hope Estate
November 19 - Adelaide - Entertainment Centre
November 22, 23 - Perth - Perth Arena
November 26, 27 - Melbourne - Rod Laver Arena
November 30 - Geelong - The Hill Winery
December 2 - Brisbane - Entertainment Centre
December 4, 6, 7 - Auckland - Vector Arena
