With only a few hours rehearsal to nail down the intricate drum parts to the Who's Quadrophenia, Roger Daltrey's solo drummer Scott Devours filled in for an ailing Zak Starkey during Tuesday night's (February 5th) concert at San Diego's Valley View Casino Center. Pete Townshend commended Devours during the show and Daltrey saluted Devours in a statement saying: "Quadrophenia's not an easy piece. To do what Scotty did took real guts."
Starkey will be back on board for Friday's (February 8th) show at Las Vegas' The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel / Casino, TheWho.com posted that his sickness was "not serious."
Part of the reason for Pete Townshend's eagerness to play out with the Who over the past decade is his connection with Starkey: "He studied at the feet of Keith Moon. He was eight years old when I first met him, his dad is Ringo Starr, but Keith Moon bought him his first drum kit. He was a big Who fan as a kid. So when John (Entwistle) passed away, suddenly there was Zak and I -- and then what I realized is that he and I have this extraordinary chemistry. And it's innate. It's a chemistry that's based on the fact that whatever I do, he's already doing it."
