Despite being renown as one of the greatest live acts of all time, the Who will be performing to a pre-recorded tape on Sunday's (August 12th) Olympics closing ceremonies. Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend are slated to close the show, preceded by such acts as George Michael, a Pink Floyd tribute of some sort, Kaiser Chiefs, Take That, Emeli Sande -- and a rumored Spice Girls reunion.
The Who is confident that they've come up with the perfect spectacle to wrap up the games and salute British rock: (Daltrey) "Well, I've prepared something, and Pete's given me free reign to do it. It is a great finale to the event. It's not a rock show, we can't do it live, we have to mime. I mean, we could do it live standing on our heads -- (laughs) we've done it for 50 years -- but because there's athletics there all day, the technical issues are just so great. (Townshend) It would be difficult for Madonna to do her. . . (laughter) (Daltrey) We have recorded a piece of music, which I think is a fabulous ending for the Olympics."
