It may not be the "Greatest Songs Of All Time" list, but the Steve Miller Band's 1976 classic, "Fly Like An Eagle" has topped the "Favorite Bird Song Survey" by the readers of Birds & Blooms magazine, garnering an impressive 17 percent of the votes. Coming in second was "Rockin' Robin" -- a hit for both Bobby Day and the Jackson Five -- with 15 percent of the votes, and rounding out the Top Three was Lynyrd Skynyrd's nine-plus minute opus, "Free Bird" -- which snagged 13 percent of reader's votes.
The song "Fly Like An Eagle" has become one of Miller's biggest hits and the centerpiece of his concerts, but Miller admitted that it actually took years for him to get it the way he wanted it: "I recorded that song three separate times, when I didn't have any money, and spent, y'know, $6,000 in 1973, which is like spending $25,000 now, or something, y'know, and was not satisfied with it, and went, 'It's still not there.' And I did that until I got the recording the way I wanted it."
