The Who and Elvis Costello & The Imposters will team up on February 28th at New York City's Theater At Madison Square Garden to benefit Teen Cancer America and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. The show will mark the final stop on the Who's tour and will feature the band performing a hits-based set. This show marks the first-ever New York-area fundraiser the band has performed for Teen Cancer America -- which is spearheaded by Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Saturday, February 2nd at 10 a.m.
In 2011, the UCLA Daltrey/Townshend Teen & Young Adult Cancer Program was launched at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. The program is an outgrowth of Britain's Teenage Cancer Trust, which has been Daltrey's patron charity for years and for which the Who have generously donated much of their time and money. Britain's Teenage Cancer Trust has helped fund 19 special teen cancer units in the UK.
Roger Daltrey said during an online interview on TheWho.Com a while back that he's amazed at the problems patients living the Western world still face in finding decent and affordable health care "It's so odd, especially when you listen to the flippant way our politicians talk about it. But when you get involved, and you see how many entrenched positions there are. I only know about our system here, I'm sure it's the same the world over. Everybody is protecting a position. And to do anything new in any of these organizations, y'know, especially ours which is publicly funded it's like pushing an eleph. . . a herd of elephants up the stairs."
