METALLICA POSTS CLASSIC CONCERT ONLINE IN MEMORY OF LATE BASSIST

10/1/2012

To commemorate the 26th anniversary of the death of bass player Cliff Burton, Metallica has made an entire vintage concert from 1984 available as a free download. A message posted at the group's Facebook page featured a photo of Burton with the caption, "We miss you," adding, "While you're remembering Cliff on the 26th anniversary of his passing, give a listen to this free download from the Ride The Lightning tour." The concert was recorded on November 22nd, 1984 at Le Riff in Toulouse, France.

Burton, who joined the band in 1982 after the departure of original bassist Ron McGovney, played on three albums and two EPs before he was killed in a tour bus crash in Sweden on September 27th, 1986. He was 24 years old.

It was Burton's early influence that helped create the unique musical style for which Metallica became famous, while adding classical and progressive elements to their sound.

The late musician was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with his bandmates in 2009. His father was on hand to accept the induction.

Burton was replaced by Jason Newsted in late 1987. Newsted left the group in 2001 and was followed in 2002 by current bass player Robert Trujillo.
