{LPS: Episode 7} TOK

Posted 3/3/2014 9:18:00 AM

On Friday, February 28th something out of this world happened: Tok released their 3rd installment called “Gold Dollar Hen House” – we are THIS much closer to realizing what the big picture is when you put all the volumes before together… (Spoiler alert: It’s Bryan Basler.) But more than that – we are unveiling what Tok is all about as a musical journey. (Spoiler alert: they are the best rock band in St Louis as voted by RFT 2013, BEST OF) and I will say – they deserve it, so much.

The first experience I had with Tok was at the Pirate Signal show back in November, 2013… (See episode 5 of LPS…) when they were opening up for Pirate Signal’s CD release of “The War of Art”. Tok stole my heart and soul that night. In fact, the guys from Pirate Signal were there supporting their fellow ...

{LPS: episode 6} GAVIN M.

Posted 1/27/2014 9:58:00 AM

Gavin McNutt, known this past show as quite simply, ‘Gavin M.’ is looking for people to play music with. A man of many acts before this singlehood on a stage at Seven Lounge in his hometown of Belleville, IL, was the man of the evening – who is solely responsible for every bar-goer's night. Luckily for him, my friends and I were drinking and feeling extra spontaneous that night.

The performance was a small one, but in so many ways articulated what every musician wants from a live show: versatility, musical nostalgia, and someone buying the musician a beer or two – all of which happened.

For a one man show – literally, because he played guitar, looped vocals, fingered the keys and still managed to remember words to songs both he wrote and some he covered –this show had enough volume and grace to make the vibe in the bar ...

{LPS} Episode 5: Pirate Signal

Posted 11/18/2013 7:12:00 AM

The only show I have seen at the Demo in the Grove was Vintage Trouble. That night, they sold out the small and yet acoustically-sensational venue. This episode of Local Produce wasn’t a sold out show, but with the level of talent in the room, it should have been. See, that is the issue with the local scene in St Louis – there isn’t a whole lot of people fleeing to the door with cash in hand, and the faith it takes to thrive it. I felt like this show was special and I was glad to be in crowded room witnessing the finest rock n roll in the city peering out from the stage.

First off was Saluda that I unfortunately missed. But the second band, Roundheels – HOLY CRAP! A three piece of guys that have purple guitars, a sense of humor and a lot to offer. I will ...

{LPS} Episode 4: OLD SALT UNION

Posted 11/12/2013 11:05:00 AM

The Old Salt Union is a band from Bellevegas, IL -- they know all the bars I like going to, and they are fun people to be around. They actually played one of their first gigs at my favorite hole in the wall, called Blue Agave in Belleville. This didn’t surprise me, because this whole experience and lead up to interviewing the OSU has been a serendipitous one, to say the least. Let me explain.

Over the summer, KSHE held a “Hog Days of Summer” event at Pitcher’s in Belleville. As we started setting up, I noticed how freaking crowded the place was – I mean PACKED. The narcissistic side of me thought, “Well, KSHE hardly ever gets to Belleville, I guess this is legit.” And I was completely wrong. These people were not there for ME and KSHE; they were crammed like sardines in this bar to see ...

{LPS} Episode 3: THE GLASS CAVALRY

Posted 10/14/2013 11:32:00 AM

About a year and half ago, I had the idea for the Local Produce Section, and one of the first emails I received was from a girl named Katie Lindhorst. She said she heard about it through the band Logos, and her friend Cullen told her to email me.

I remember being smitten with delight that the FIRST submission for LPS, before it was even a thought in my boss’ brain to ‘okay’, was from a chick, in a local band, who wanted to be a part of this.

For a year, Katie and I emailed frequently, and instead of ‘girl talk’ we talked business. We discussed what worked for our schedules and then through an act of strategic planning, I witnessed by first show at the Firebird on August 30th with THE GLASS CAVALRY

Now, the story doesn’t stop there. After a few shots ...
